Having a client meeting but forgot your laptop? Trust your iPad with IBM Connections!

I left my home office last week to join my colleagues at the headquarter 1,5 hours drive away. Arriving at the headquarter I discovered that I had forgotten my laptop at home. Normally that would arouse a panic feeling being helpless being totally without a work tool. But did I panic? No.

I fortunately had my iPad mini with a Logitech keyboard with me. With that tiny little tool and some of my social collaboration apps from IBM it was business as usual. I used IBM Connections, IBM SameTime, IBM Meetings as usual. Even our own version of SugarCRM (Sales Connect) is implemented as an app on my iPad.

I am a mobile worker, my office is where my body happens to be, I have my office in my hand and in my head. Easy as that. There are only a few things I need my laptop to do, things I don’t have to do very often. 75 % of all my work I can do on my iPad or iPhone. Just have a look at the video below and you see what I mean.

Today IBM and Apple announced a strategic partnership that combines the market-leading strengths of each company to transform enterprise mobility and redefine how work gets done. This will totally change the game for the enterprise mobile market and hit competitors like Google and Microsoft right in their guts.

This will bring IBM’s big data, analytics, cloud, mobile integration, and security capabilities to iPhone and iPad. Together IBM and Apple will jointly develop and deliver more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions for iPhone and iPad. More than 100,000 IBM will be involved in developing and selling these new applications. And IBM will start selling both iPads and iPhones to their enterprise customers.

Among the planned deliveries are:

  • A new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions including native apps, developed exclusively from the ground up, for iPhone and iPad.
  • Unique IBM cloud services optimized for iOS, including device management, security, analytics and mobile integration.
  • New AppleCare service and support offering tailored to the needs of the enterprise.
  • New packaged offerings from IBM for device activation, supply and management.

– The landmark partnership aims to redefine the way work will get done, address key industry mobility challenges and spark true mobile-led business change, says Apple in a press release.

– For the first time ever we are putting IBM’s renowned big data analytic at iOS users’ fingertips, which opens up a large market opportunity for Apple. This is a radical step for enterprise and something that only Apple and IBM can deliver, says Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook.

– Mobility – combined with the phenomena of data and cloud – is transforming business and our industry in historic ways, allowing people to re-imagine work, industries and professions, says IBM Chairman, President and CEO, Ginni Rometty.

IBM have for a long time back been delivering professional business apps to iOS and their more than 5.000 mobile experts have been in forefront of mobile enterprise innovation. IBM has secured more than 4.300 patents in mobile, social and security that have been incorporated into IBM MobileFirst solutions. The company has made a dozen acquisitions in security in the past decade and has more than 6.000 security researchers and developers in their 25 security labs around the world.

Fortune 500: Apple on top, IBM second, Microsoft less profitable.

Fortune has published their Fortune 500 list of the worlds leading companies. This is interesting as most of the companies on top of the list are such companies most of us has never heard of.

But what is interesting, to me at least, is to see a comparison of IT companies that is working within the collaboration market and are in he same «league», so to speak. And for me that is companies like Apple, IBM, Microsoft and Google.

Apple is now ranked as the 19. biggest company in the world. IBM ranked as the worlds 62.  biggest company, while Microsoft is ranked as worlds 110. biggest company and Google is ranked 189.

Apples profit is up by 61 % from 2011. IBM’s profit is up 4.7 % since 2011 while Microsoft’s profit is down with 26.7 % in the same period. Google’s profit is up 10,3 %.

IBM had 466.995 employees in the period, while Microsoft had 94.000 employees and Apple had 76.100 employees in the same period. Google had 53.861 employees.

So what is happening, Microsoft? Nothing much?

More employees than customers at the Microsoft Shop.

Crowded at Apple Store – Quiet at Microsoft Store!

Dear Microsoft! The guys at Apple Store close to your shop in Orlando has a lot to do. Their shop is over crowded with interested customers. But your new Microsoft shop seems to be over crowded with employees. How come?

Well, there seems to be some customers at the support desk. At least that is something…

“There was high anticipation and many requests for iPad compatibility, and we’re pleased we can offer this now at a highly secure level.”

IBM’s kunder er enige. Dette sier en av dem, Dave Stall, Lotus Notes Manager i rørleggerfirmaet Roto-Rooter Services:

“Lotus Notes on the iPad is convenient and helps me stay on top of my e-mails.”

“I don’t have to go home at night and fire up my laptop to see my messages “The iPad is sitting next to me on the couch and I can respond to anything that needs my attention quickly.”

“I like when forwarding an e-mail, you can type the first letter of a person’s name and get a list of people. You then select that person by tapping the screen. This saves a lot of typing and time.”

John Roling, IT Director, Czarnowski, en IBM kunde og Business Partner:

“I can see this taking the place of a laptop for the executive and sales staff, and they live on e-mail. Lotus Notes Traveler makes that transition easy.”

Almar Diehl, Groupware Consultant, e-office:

“When Lotus Notes Traveler iPad users are in a meeting, they can now have up to date ‘push’ mail and calendar.”

Her er noen sitater fra IBM´s offisielle pressmelding:

IBM Lotus Notes Traveler is no charge software that can be downloaded by Lotus Notes customers providing two-way, over-the-air synchronization of enterprise e-mail, calendar and contact between Lotus Domino servers and mobile devices, including the iPad. This means that Lotus Notes based information will automatically synchronize and be up to date on the device. Lotus Notes Traveler also allows iPad users to enjoy the security of per message mail encryption.

“IBM is committed to providing the broadest possible collaboration software support on all major mobile platforms. With high anticipation and many requests for iPad compatibility for Lotus Notes, we’re pleased we can offer this now at a highly secure level,” said Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president, messaging and collaboration, IBM.
